Old East Dallas Apartments

In short

Old East Dallas was its own town, incorporated in 1882, until it became part of Dallas on January 1, 1890. Today it is the area just east of downtown and US 75, with historic districts such as Swiss Avenue and Munger Place, Baylor University Medical Center on Gaston Avenue, and a DART Green Line station.

Where is Old East Dallas?

Old East Dallas is the part of the city just east of downtown, on the east side of US 75, the North Central Expressway. It grew from a separate town: East Dallas was incorporated on September 9, 1882, on 1,400 acres, and became part of Dallas on January 1, 1890 (Handbook of Texas).

Its long avenues run out of downtown toward the northeast: Ross Avenue, Live Oak Street, Swiss Avenue and Gaston Avenue. Henderson Avenue comes down from Knox Street and ends at Columbia Avenue on the east side (U.S. Census Bureau, TIGER/Line roads).

The name East Dallas now covers a much larger area, north to Mockingbird Lane and east to Loop 12 (Handbook of Texas). Old East Dallas is the older part, closest to downtown.

Junius Heights began in 1906 as a streetcar development and has more than 800 Craftsman, Prairie and Tudor houses. Peak’s Suburban Addition, Dallas’s 14th historic district (1995), mixes Victorian houses, Prairie houses and apartment buildings from the streetcar years of the 1920s and 1930s (City of Dallas).
