In short

Highland Park is a separate town next to Dallas, not a Dallas neighborhood: its residents voted to incorporate on November 29, 1913. It covers about 2.2 square miles along US 75, with the Dallas North Tollway crossing its west side. About four in five of its homes are detached houses (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020–2024).

Where is Highland Park?

Highland Park is its own town, next to Dallas. Dallas surrounds it on the south, east and west, and the city of University Park lies to the north; the two towns together are called the Park Cities (Wikipedia). The town covers about 2.2 square miles of land (U.S. Census Bureau).

Mockingbird Lane crosses the north end of town, near the line with University Park. US 75, the North Central Expressway, runs along its eastern edge, and the Dallas North Tollway passes through its western part. Preston Road runs north and south through the middle, and Knox Street comes in from Knox Henderson on the southeast side (U.S. Census Bureau, TIGER/Line).

A town of houses, parks and a 1931 shopping center

Most of the town is houses. About four in five homes are detached single-family houses, and about one in eight, roughly 455 homes give or take 108, is in a building with five or more units (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates, table B25024). Apartments are a small part of the town, so we also look in the Dallas neighborhoods along its edges.

John S. Armstrong began developing the land as Highland Park in 1906. Wilbur David Cook and George E. Kessler worked on its layout, and twenty percent of the original land was set aside for parks. An earlier developer, Henry Exall, had dammed Turtle Creek to form Exall Lake (Handbook of Texas), which is still on the federal map of place names (U.S. Geological Survey).

Highland Park Village, at the southwest corner of Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road, opened in 1931. The Handbook of Texas calls it the first shopping center of its type in the United States, and it is a National Historic Landmark (Wikipedia).
