Lake Highlands covers most of northeast Dallas. Northwest Highway, also called Loop 12, and White Rock Lake form its southern edge, and to the north and east it runs to the city limits of Richardson and Garland. Its western edge is put at White Rock Creek or at US 75, depending on who draws the map (Wikipedia).
I-635, the LBJ Freeway, cuts across the middle from southeast to northwest, and the DART Blue Line crosses it from southwest to northeast. The main roads make a rough grid: Skillman Street, Abrams Road and Audelia Road run roughly north and south, and Walnut Hill Lane, Forest Lane and Royal Lane run east and west.
Subdivisions, a town center and a creek
Lake Highlands is not one development but dozens of subdivisions, built mostly in the later 20th century, where most local trips are made by car (Wikipedia). Lake Highlands Town Center, the mixed-use project beside Lake Highlands station, opened in 2014, after delays during the recession.
Water shapes the south end. White Rock Creek runs down from the north into White Rock Lake, a reservoir built at the start of the 20th century, and the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden sits on the lake’s eastern shore. Trails follow the creek as part of the Dallas County trail system (Wikipedia).
Three stations on the Blue Line
Three Blue Line stations sit in Lake Highlands or on its edge. White Rock, at 7333 E. Northwest Highway, has 496 free parking spaces. Lake Highlands, at Walnut Hill Lane and White Rock Trail, has 68. LBJ/Skillman, north of I-635 between Skillman Street and Miller Road, has 654 (DART).
Southwest, the Blue Line goes through the tunnel under US 75 into downtown Dallas; northeast, it continues to Garland and Rowlett. White Rock opened in 2001 and LBJ/Skillman in 2002; Lake Highlands followed in 2010 as DART’s first station added to a line already running (Wikipedia). By car, I-635 runs across the area, US 75 is to the west, and Northwest Highway runs along the south.
