Knox Henderson Apartments

In short

Knox Henderson is one street with two names: Knox Street west of US 75 and Henderson Avenue east of it. The Katy Trail crosses Knox Street. DART’s Red, Blue and Orange lines run in a tunnel under US 75 here; the nearest stations are Cityplace/Uptown, opened in 2000, and SMU/Mockingbird.

Where is Knox Henderson?

Knox Henderson sits on both sides of US 75, the North Central Expressway, north of Uptown. The street changes its name at the expressway: west of US 75 it is Knox Street, and east of it, Henderson Avenue (U.S. Census Bureau, TIGER/Line roads).

On the west side, Knox Street crosses McKinney Avenue and then Cole Avenue, and runs on into Highland Park, which is a separate town. On the east side, Henderson Avenue runs southeast past the streets of Vickery Place, crosses Ross Avenue and then Greenville Avenue, and ends at Columbia Avenue in Old East Dallas.

What is on Knox and Henderson

The blocks of Knox Street west of the expressway have shops and restaurants. Henderson Avenue, on the east side, is longer and has restaurants and bars, with houses on the side streets behind it.

The Katy Trail crosses Knox Street, with a step-free entrance at the crossing. The trail is a 3.5-mile concrete path on the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas rail line, from Airline Road in the north to the American Airlines Center in Victory Park (Friends of the Katy Trail).

Under the expressway there is a station that never opened. When DART built the rail tunnel under US 75 in the 1990s, it dug out platforms at Knox Street, about 80 feet down, but the station was never finished. It is not in DART’s 2045 plan, and the space is used as an emergency exit (Wikipedia, citing DART).

Getting around without a station of its own

Trains pass under Knox Henderson without stopping. The closest DART stations are at both ends of this stretch of tunnel: Cityplace/Uptown, under the expressway at 2711 N. Haskell Avenue, and SMU/Mockingbird, at Mockingbird Lane. Both serve the Red, Orange and Blue lines (DART).

Cityplace/Uptown has no public parking, and its platforms sit about ten stories below the street; the M-Line Trolley stops at its west entrance. SMU/Mockingbird has 140 free parking spaces (DART). By car, US 75 is the road north toward Richardson and south into downtown.
