In short

Far North Dallas is the part of Dallas between I-635 and the President George Bush Turnpike, spread across Dallas, Collin and Denton counties. It takes in more than 30 named neighborhoods, from Prestonwood to the old town of Renner, annexed in 1977. Since 2025 the DART Silver Line has stopped at Knoll Trail. The search is free.

Where it is

Far North Dallas is the part of the city north of I-635, the LBJ Freeway, and south of the President George Bush Turnpike. Along Preston Road, the turnpike is also the city line with Plano. Most of the area is in Dallas County, a smaller share in Collin County and a corner in Denton County.

The Dallas North Tollway and Preston Road run north–south through the middle. Belt Line Road, Arapaho Road and Frankford Road cross it east–west, and Coit Road and Hillcrest Road also run north–south. Preston Road meets Frankford Road about a mile south of the turnpike.

What is here

It is many neighborhoods rather than one. More than 30 have names, among them Prestonwood, Bent Tree, Preston Highlands, Preston Fairways, Timberglen and Renner. Prestonwood, around Belt Line Road, has its own page.

Renner was a town of its own. It had a post office from 1888 and incorporated in 1954, and Dallas annexed it in 1977, after Dallas voters approved the annexation 16,500 to 10,039. Its houses stood near the St. Louis Southwestern railroad, the Cotton Belt, and its farmland reached north toward Plano.

At the southern edge, where I-635 meets the Dallas North Tollway, Galleria Dallas opened on October 30, 1982. Its glass vaulted roof was modeled on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, and there is an ice rink under it.

Getting around

The DART Silver Line opened on October 25, 2025, on the old Cotton Belt railroad, a St. Louis Southwestern Railway right-of-way that DART bought in 1990. Its only station in Far North Dallas is Knoll Trail, near Arapaho Road and the Tollway. From there trains run west to Addison, Downtown Carrollton and DFW Airport Terminal B, and east to UT Dallas and Plano.

At opening, Silver Line trains ran every 30 minutes in the weekday rush hours and every hour at other times, so check the schedule before you plan a commute around it.

The Dallas North Tollway, run by the North Texas Tollway Authority, has been all-electronic since December 11, 2010: you pay with a TollTag or by invoice, and there are no toll booths. Preston Road and the other surface streets are free.
