Highland Park is its own town, next to Dallas and not a Dallas neighborhood: its residents voted to incorporate on November 29, 1913. Dallas surrounds it on the south, east and west, and the city of University Park lies to the north; the two towns together are called the Park Cities. The town covers about 2.2 square miles.
Most of the town is houses. Apartments are a small part of it, so we also look in the Dallas neighborhoods along its edges. John S. Armstrong began developing the land as Highland Park in 1906, with twenty percent of the original land set aside for parks, and Highland Park Village, at the southwest corner of Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road, opened in 1931.
