Oak Cliff lies southwest of downtown Dallas, on the far side of the Trinity River. Its edges are usually drawn at I-30 on the north, Loop 12 on the west, I-45 on the east and I-20 on the south, and Bishop Arts, which has its own page, is one district inside it. I-35E, the R. L. Thornton Freeway, runs north to south through its eastern side.
Oak Cliff began in 1887, when John S. Armstrong and Thomas L. Marsalis bought a 320-acre farm on the west side of the Trinity for $8,000. It incorporated in 1890, and Dallas annexed it in 1903; the proposal passed by 18 votes. The Texas Theatre, on West Jefferson Boulevard, opened on April 21, 1931, and still shows films.

The Dallas Streetcar opened on April 13, 2015, from Union Station to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, and a second phase took it on to Bishop Arts in August 2016. By car, I-35E is the direct way north into downtown, and I-30, along the northern edge, heads west toward Arlington and Fort Worth.
Close to home
The Dallas Zoo, open since 1888, covers 106 acres in Marsalis Park, about 3 miles south of downtown, and is the oldest zoo in Texas. Methodist Dallas Medical Center has been a hospital since 1928.
Kiest Park has 263 acres between West Kiest Boulevard and South Hampton Road, with hike-and-bike trails, tennis courts and ball fields. Lake Cliff Park started in 1906 as a private amusement park; the city bought it in 1914, and its 45 acres now wrap around a sunken lake that reflects the downtown skyline.
