Living in Bishop Arts

Bishop Arts sits in north Oak Cliff, around North Bishop Avenue and Davis Street, about two miles southwest of downtown Dallas. Its historic core is the blocks between Davis and 9th streets, from Adams to Madison, and it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

The district is a few blocks of independent boutiques, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and art galleries, in buildings that started as 1920s warehouses. In the 1930s, a streetcar stop on Davis Street here was the busiest in Dallas.

Questions about Bishop Arts

Is Bishop Arts a historic district?

Part of it is. The North Bishop Avenue Commercial Historic District, the original core of Bishop Arts, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 17, 1994. It lies in the Hillside Addition, one of the early Oak Cliff subdivisions.

Is there a streetcar?

Yes. The Dallas Streetcar ends in Bishop Arts. Union Station, downtown, is five stops away.

Is the streetcar free?

No. When we checked in October 2026, a one-way ride cost $1.00 on the GoPass app or a GoPass Tap card. DART’s Local passes include the streetcar too.

When was the Houston Street Viaduct built?

Work began in October 1910 and the bridge opened to traffic in February 1912, after the 1908 Trinity River flood destroyed the earlier bridges between Oak Cliff and downtown. The streetcar crosses it today.
