Living in Downtown

Downtown is the part of Dallas inside its inner freeway loop: Woodall Rodgers Freeway on the north, I-35E on the west, I-30 on the south and an elevated stretch, I-345, on the east. Main Street crosses the middle from west to east, and the named districts inside the loop include the West End, the Main Street District, the Arts District, the Government District, the Farmers Market District and Reunion.

Office towers and the historic commercial buildings of Main Street, many restored for new uses including hotels, stand beside the museums and concert halls of the 118-acre Arts District on the north side, and the Dallas Farmers Market is on the southeast side. West End station is the westernmost stop served by all four DART light-rail lines: Red, Blue, Green and Orange.

Getting around

  • The Red, Blue, Green and Orange lines all run through downtown, with stations that include West End, Akard, St. Paul and Pearl/Arts District. From here the Orange Line goes on to Las Colinas and DFW Airport, Terminal A, without a change of train. Trinity Railway Express trains leave from EBJ Union Station for Fort Worth, and the Dallas Streetcar starts at the same station and runs 2.45 miles across the Trinity River to the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff. By car, the loop connects to I-35E, I-30 and US 75 north toward Richardson and Plano.

Close to home

Klyde Warren Park opened on October 27, 2012, on a deck built over Woodall Rodgers Freeway between Pearl Street and St. Paul Street. The other parks are Main Street Garden, on the east end of Main Street, and Pacific Plaza, 3.7 acres that opened in 2019.

The Dallas Farmers Market, at 920 S. Harwood Street, became a city-owned and city-run market in 1941. Every Saturday and Sunday, local producers sell in The Shed, its open-air pavilion. Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum are on the west side.
