Deep Ellum starts just east of downtown, across the elevated I-345, and runs east to Exposition Avenue. Its name comes from Elm Street, and five streets cross it from downtown: Pacific Avenue and Elm, Main, Commerce and Canton streets. Bryan Place is to the north.
It is a historic arts and entertainment district, with live music venues, street murals, bars and restaurants on Elm, Main and Commerce. It grew in the 1870s around the junction of two railroads, which were connected by 1873.
