Living in Lake Highlands

Lake Highlands covers most of northeast Dallas. Northwest Highway, also called Loop 12, and White Rock Lake form its southern edge, and to the north and east it runs to the city limits of Richardson and Garland. I-635, the LBJ Freeway, cuts across the middle, and the main roads make a rough grid: Skillman Street, Abrams Road and Audelia Road run north and south, and Walnut Hill Lane, Forest Lane and Royal Lane run east and west.

Lake Highlands is not one development but dozens of subdivisions, built mostly in the later 20th century, where most local trips are made by car. Lake Highlands Town Center, the mixed-use project beside Lake Highlands station, opened in 2014, after delays during the recession. Most of the area is in Richardson ISD.

Questions about Lake Highlands

Is Lake Highlands in Dallas or Richardson?

In the City of Dallas. Its northern edge is the Richardson city limit, and most of it is in Richardson ISD, the same school district that serves the city of Richardson.

Can I take the train downtown?

Yes. The Blue Line runs from White Rock, Lake Highlands and LBJ/Skillman stations into downtown Dallas, through the tunnel under US 75, with no transfer.

Where can I park and ride?

LBJ/Skillman has the most free spaces, 654. White Rock has 496 and Lake Highlands has 68 (DART).

Can I reach White Rock Lake without a car?

Yes. The White Rock Creek Trail starts at White Rock station and connects to the lake and to Flag Pole Hill Park.

Why did Lake Highlands station open later than the others?

It was left out when the line was built and added in 2010, next to the planned Lake Highlands Town Center. It was the first station DART added to a line already in service (Wikipedia).
