Living in Far North Dallas

Far North Dallas is the part of the city north of I-635, the LBJ Freeway, and south of the President George Bush Turnpike; along Preston Road, the turnpike is also the city line with Plano. Most of the area is in Dallas County, a smaller share in Collin County and a corner in Denton County. The Dallas North Tollway and Preston Road run north and south through the middle, and Belt Line Road, Arapaho Road and Frankford Road cross it east to west.

It is many neighborhoods rather than one: more than 30 have names, among them Prestonwood, Bent Tree, Preston Highlands, Preston Fairways, Timberglen and Renner. Renner was a town of its own, with a post office from 1888, incorporated in 1954 and annexed by Dallas in 1977. At the southern edge, where I-635 meets the Dallas North Tollway, Galleria Dallas opened on October 30, 1982.

Getting around

  • The DART Silver Line opened on October 25, 2025. Its only station in Far North Dallas is Knoll Trail, near Arapaho Road and the Tollway, with trains west to Addison, Downtown Carrollton and DFW Airport Terminal B, and east to UT Dallas and Plano. Silver Line trains run less often than other DART lines: when it opened, every 30 minutes in the weekday rush hours and every hour at other times, so check the schedule before you plan a commute around it. The Dallas North Tollway is all-electronic, paid with a TollTag or by invoice.

Close to home

Galleria Dallas, at I-635 and the Tollway, has shopping and public ice skating under one roof, and its glass vaulted roof was modeled on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. Fretz Park, one of three Dallas Public Library branches in the area, opened in 1976.

The other two branches are Renner Frankford, opened in 1987, and Timberglen, opened in 2007. The area’s ZIP codes are 75240, 75243, 75248, 75252, 75254 and 75287. Preston Road and the other surface streets are free.
